I jumped off the couch, took a short shower, threw on the clothing that I had fortunately put out the night before, grabbed what I needed and sprinted out the door. Unfortunately, the night before I had to park my car almost a full block way. I took a quick look at my watch and realized that I was only going to be about thirty minutes late. I had managed to make up for some of my missing time already. I felt a little more relaxed until…I got to my car and realized that my keys were not in my purse. I remembered that those keys were now resting comfortably inside my locked townhouse. My house key was safely on that same keychain! I was not a happy woman.

Coincidentally, my next-door neighbor was just coming home from his night-shift job, parking in an open curb space across the street. As he got out of his car, with a fast-food paper bag containing his breakfast and a cup of coffee in his hand, I all but tackled him as I ran across the street to tell him my problem. I know he felt sorry for me because he immediately helped me into the passenger side of his vehicle, exited his prime parking space and went on to drive me to my office. Let me first point out that being a mother is the most challenging, yet rewarding, experience in a woman’s life. Women have the ability to love their child unconditionally, in spite of the circumstances. It is said that a Mother’s Love begins at the very thought of conception and never ends; not even after death.

This year I wanted to mark my mother’s 80th birthday with something special. It didn’t need to be expensive; I simply wanted somethat that would reflect upon her life and our relationship. Mistakes are made. Often, all a mother can do is guide the child to learn from their mistakes; to make better decisions; to accept that her child is not perfect. In this stage of motherhood, her love needs to be very forgiving and understanding.

The child who becomes an adult understands and appreciates the love their mother has shown them over the years. They realize she has been their biggest fan; their strongest support; their best teacher; their most sincere critic. The mother of an adult child finally sees that her sacrifices and efforts in raising her child were not in vain. The love she has for her adult child is full of pride.

There is a special bond formed by mother and child once the child becomes a parent. The mother’s ever-changing role is now defined as “Grandmother”. This woman’s love has come full circle now because she understands the challenges her child will face in raising a child. She knows the rewards her child will receive. She appreciates the lessons in love that her grandchild will learn.
