The surest method to determine  if a diamond is real or not is to go to a professional for an evaluation. It takes more than a jewelers’ loupe for clever amateurs to assess a stone. Even trained professionals are finding it difficult to determine a “real” diamond.

While that may be true, there are still things that have to be considered and followed. If you are thinking of buying a diamond already in a setting, examine the setting and look for a metal stamp inside the band that will show the grade of gold, i.e., 10k, 14k, 18k, or Pl (platinum), as if you see these markings indicating a quality setting, it increases the odds that the stone mounted in it is real. 

You can closely watch and observe the corners, edges and girdle-band of the cut stone, with the help of a handy magnifying glass or a jeweler’s loupe If the edges are soft and rolled, it is an indication of a fake one. So does a clear, waxy-even strap where the facets get together and alter direction around the “belly” of the stone.

Use a jeweler’s loupe to check the stone for minute fractures, little flecks, and inclusions. It’s hard to replicate these features, which are naturally occurring and very elaborate at the microscopic level. Minor flaws that are all to commonly allowed through cannot be easily spotted by an amateur, and natural diamonds are most valued when they are least flawed.

Generally, weight may be utilized as a normal indicator for those types of things. Substitutions for real diamonds use many materials that are heavier or lighter and the most common substitute, cubic zirconium, is actually a bit heavier than the real gem. You need a precision scale and few genuine diamonds to be able to compare them.

Keep glass away from your diamond to avoid scratching. Any metals present could be affected by any testing that utilizes acids. Don’t give in to your curiosity and try to smash a diamond because it will crush because it is a crystalline material.    Since a pure diamond shifts the heat fast enough to clear the stone, you can fog the stone and see if you can look at it. It’s only a hint and even that is not fail proof. Be careful about composition diamonds, which have a base of one material and a table top made of diamonds, this will pass a diamond tester, but be relatively worthless.

A jeweler can tell you whether or not you got ripped off when you bought your “diamond”. You must not only choose your jewelers but also ask for documentation of each gem. Every stone is unique, and solid documentation can pay off when trying to figure out yours.. A professional jeweler, working with trustworthy sources, would be dependable, helpful, and capable of ensuring you an absolute grade of appraisal.

Although chain jewelry stores are reputable firms, you may wish to consult a gemological laboratory when you desire an independent appraisal. Mass produced manufacture of broad distribution shows both strength and weakness. Managers of these stores are often talented and honest men and women with honest supporting staff, but very few have the advanced training of managers and employees of higher grade jewelry stores or assessment businesses.

After you’ve found an appraisal service by searching online or in the yellow pages, make sure you thoroughly vet the assessor by looking at his or her experience, licensing and background. The best indicators of a skilled jeweler, is someone who is licensed, a journeyman from a traditional trade program, or someone who used to be a stone dealer.

Whenever you bring in a stone you are well within your rights to ask that it be tested under your supervision. to avoid unscrupulous jewelers changing it out  . In the event you are turned down, you should go right out of the store. You can ask for complete documentation if you intend to buy a stone.. Regardless of your choice, you will need to understand that even the pros have difficulty in determining if a diamond is real or not, sometimes even looking at them two or three times.

Moissanite is a stone that is produced in a laboratory. It is patterned after a crystal located in the center of a meteorite and is an excellent choice, despite costing somewhat more than stones of cubic zirconium. The stone is twice as brilliant as a diamond and slightly harder. Of course it  increases the beauty of the diamond but also leads to identification by those who want the muted fire of the diamond., and refracts lightness somewhat differently, directing whatever group to find that it has a sick chromatic color. Moissanite has its good and bad points, but it just depends on what you like.

Used as a diamond substitute for over a hundred years are white sapphires. When compared with a diamond, the white sapphire is less durable and its fire is softer, but because of its ability to be cut like a diamond few will challenge its lovely luster and beauty.

The only limits to considering a stone that is outside the diamond look-alike field are those you set yourself. Stones such as rubies, sapphires, jade are used a substances because of there strength and hardness. These elements are good to consider because the ring will be worn for a long period of time.

A good choice would be a hue that blends well with the spectrum of colors you tend to wear regularly. The entire world of fine stones is open beyond that. What about a star sapphire or some other type of carborundum like a ruby stone? Absolutely! What a remarkable difference when compared to a diamond!
