The Quality of Akoya Pearl

An Akoya pearl is considered as one of the most popular types of pearls of today which is basically grown and harvested through akoya oysters. These pearls are often cultured and harvested in the farms of Japan and China. Generally, an Akoya pearl is considered as the most lustrous of all pearls and this significantly elevates the quality of the pearl.

However, the pearl’s luster is only one of the five qualities that are being considered to determine the quality of the pearls. Among the other qualities are the shape, surface, size, and color.

Pearls are of various colors like white, silver, cream, champagne, gold, green, blue, black, and a lot more. Pearls usually have overtones that appear to be very evident from the pearl’s basic color. Akoya pearls are often white or cream in color accentuated with overtones like silver, cream, or rose. It is through the color of the pearl that a person is able to determine the best pearl for her.

The quality of pearl is also greatly influenced by its sheer size. Typically, a pearl with a larger size fairly has a much higher price. This is done by simply measuring the diameter of the pearl in terms of millimeters. But the Akoya pearls are relatively small in sizes as they are grown from the world’s smallest pearl-producing oyster. The average size of Akoya pearls range from 6-8 millimeters which is relatively smaller compared to freshwater, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls. However, the size of the pearls that is often marketed and sold today are that of Akoya’s.

However, the size of the pearls that is often marketed and sold today are that of Akoya’s. Basically, a pearl needs to have no spots, bumps, and discolorations in order for it to have a higher quality. The main advantage of Akoya pearls is that they are most of the time shiny and reflective which in turn provides them with a high quality.

Freshwater pearls also vary in their shapes. In some cases, pearls have ringed shapes, significantly flattened into a disk-like button, tear-drop shapes, and those that are known as baroque pearls. Pearls in baroque shapes are the ones that appear as abstract and asymmetrical. Perfectly round pearls are witnessed once in a while and are considered to be of highest quality. One good example is the Akoya pearl which often comes out to have round or near-round shapes.  These main characteristics of Akoya pearls help elevate their quality. Today, Akoya pearls are the most sought after of pearls and are perfect when made into sets of jewelries.
